Do this as Star Citizen, with open world economy, where u can travel, sell stuff, combat...
Also your ship is your life, not like this where u die 1000 times and nothings happends.
Crew should have names, statistics and can be assigned to certain positions, there should be officers and seamen. All can be awarded medals or improve in their stats in time, u die they die with you...
Have u played Silent Hunter III? Thats was the best simulation game i have ever played, on 100% realistic mode where i kept a calculator on my side to compute the firing solutions, best naval simulator available to date.
the combat system i came up with is based on physics not random stats player can change the direction of the cannon if your ships rudder gets damaged it reduces you movement or even prevents you from changing direction if completely destroyed
one shot kills possible if cannon ball punctures through the hull at water level tho takes time to sink ,
possible to board the enemy's ships to try take control
customization ships from heavy armored to light weight but fast could easily tie into the economy ,sell stuff you suggested
travel great idea could add market places that buy or sell stuff at different prices due to demand / supply
lol i hate the die 1000 times and nothing happens in my system ship insurance is necessary in the game if your ship is sunk player goes to last port they visited and a plain ship is supplied for the type you had insured tho and mods or weapons is not covered unless you have insurance for that as-well, anything you had on your boat is lost even your crew the enemy ship can take your crew and use or sell them
crew members have skills and preferred roles the quality of the skill ranges goes from bad to excellent cost of crew depends on the role and quality of the skills
